The basic ready position
Note that the gun is positioned perpendicularly beneath the right master eye at address. Regardless of the anticipated shot the eye is never positioned off this line, and this eye/gun relationship remains constant throughout the shot.

The stock rests lightly against the side of the body, never away from it. This gun/body contact is maintained as the gun is being mounted, the stock never being allowed to drift away from the body. Should it do so then the relationship between eye and gun is broken.

Other points to watch for:

  • The ready position should be relaxed and upright
  • Body weight is shared equally between the two feet
  • The 'S' shape stance, stomach bulging forward and backside sticking out like a duck, is to be avoided!
  • If your ready position is 'S' shaped then lose some weight and get fitter. Your shooting can only benefit
  • Avoid turning the head away from the line to look for the target. Move the eyes only. If you still can't see properly then your set up position is wrong.
